The weekend ahead is the third and final volleyball extravaganza for thrills and excitement as over 100 teams travel to Perth for this year’s Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament.
The volleyball cup finals of two weekends ago and last weekend’s Celtic Cup will be eclipsed by the sheer numbers and variety of countries represented at the “Perth Open.”
Started in 1985 the Scottish Open has grown to be the U K’s largest volleyball tournament with the top men’s and women’s teams playing on Bell’ s Sports Centre’s five indoor courts and the other divisions playing on 36 outdoor courts on the adjacent North Inch.
In the men’s division of honour USA Athletes from Kansas return to their favourite volleyball venue and German side Haustier make their first appearance at the tournament.
Newcastle based French Connection UK are also included in this year’s division of honour along with the Scottish Juniors paying as Caledonia 2 and other Scottish teams from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Fife.
In the women’s division of honour last year’s finalists Troon and City of Edinburgh return to do battle once again along with USA Athletes, NUVOC and Aberdonia.
In the outdoor divisions the majority of entries are for the mixed divisions which provide one of the few competitive outlets for mixed volleyball and continues to be extremely popular.
In women’s division one previous winners from the Faroe Islands women return to compete in the division which seen them have much success in the past.
In the men’s divisions there are numerous entries from the many local sides and from further afield as English sides take advantage of the spring bank holiday weekend to take in the annual tournament which goes from strength to strength mainly thanks to a committed group of local volunteers.
Supplementing the competition is the traditional welcome ceilidh on the Friday evening with a disco on the Saturday both events taking place in the Bell’s Sports Complex.
