2010 Results

This year 130 teams entered the tournament with players coming from a range of countries including U.S.A., Poland,Germany, France, Czech Republic, Holland and the Faroe Islands. Although the weather was mixed over the weekend (with more than a little rain) this didn’t detract from the fun, as the teams playing outdoors adjusted their game and tactics accordingly.

A quality field was assembled for the Divisions of Honour.  The women’s division had the league winners City of Edinburgh and the cup winners Troon face the challenge of the younger generation in the two Scotland junior teams as well as the American team US Athletes. The Men’s division included the Scotland National team, who were preparing for a tournament in Andorra, teams from  Germany and USA, a composite teams of French players, and the Scotland juniors that included some experienced seniors.

Division of Honour Women

The semi-finals on the Sunday saw the Americans taking on City of Edinburgh and Troon playing Edinburgh Jets.  City of Edinburgh were taken close in the first set but after that dominated the match winning 2-0.  Jets side put up a fight despite injury problems though went down 2-0 to Troon. Troon were denied from retaining the Scottish Open title in their 5th consecutive final as City of Edinburgh triumphed to become Scottish Open Champions for 2010.

Division of Honour Men

The Men’s tournament was very competitive.  The Scotland juniors surpassed themselves with only a loss to the Germans to qualify for the trophy semi-final, with the Germans pushing the US Athletes into the Consolation group. Caledonia (the Scotland National team) came through their pool as expected easily winning all their games. French Connection UK managed to get past the other two club teams, Dundee and Kilmarnock, in the pool. The first Sunday semi-final had the Germans take on the French.  The Germans made the better start but faded badly to lose 2-0. UK United, then played Caledonia. The youngsters in the UK United team were not able to compete against the power of their older counterparts losing the match 2-0.  In a 3/4 playoff UK United beat the Germans 2-1.  The final was expected to be a one sided affair, but the final watched by over a hundred people brought out the fighters in the French.  The first set was over very quickly with Caledonia taking it 25-15, the French came back into the match as Caledonia lost their first set of the tournament.  Caledonia came out strongly in the third as they came through easily to win the match 2-1.

There were also 115 teams competing across 6 divisions in the outdoor events:
